The Oriental Pearl TV Tower stands on the golden land of Lujiazui in Pudong New Area, facing the Bund on the opposite bank of the Huangpu River. With a height of 468 m (1535 ft), the tower is the highest of its kind in Asia and the third tallest building in the world. It is now regarded by the world as the symbol of Shanghai.
Seen from afar, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower could be seen as a strand of pearls dropping from the sky down onto green grasslands. The tower is formed from 11 spheres of different sizes, of which two ruby-like ones are the most impressive. Visitors can look out over the spectacular city vista from 4 vantage points: the space capsule (350 m/1148 ft), the main sightseeing floor of the upper sphere (263 m/863 ft), the outdoor sightseeing floor of the upper sphere (259 m/850 ft) and the outdoor sightseeing passage of the lower sphere (90 m/295 ft). The tower is equipped with a double-decker elevator with a capacity of 50 people, and another elevator with a high speed of 7 m (23 ft)/s.
In addition to the sight seeing areas, the Tower also boasts a conference hall and cafe in the space capsule. In the upper sphere there is a revolving restaurant (1 round/h), which is the highest of its kind in Asia, a Disco dancing floor and a piano pub (267 m/876 ft), along with Karaoke TV rooms (271 m/889 ft). In the 5 lower, smaller spheres are aerial hotels. You can also visit 'space city' in the lower sphere and 'science fiction city' in the base of the Tower. Every sightseeing floor has souvenirs for sale.
On the Tower's ground floor stands the Historical Exhibition Hall of Shanghai City, which charts the historical development of the city through technology. Any visitors who wish to embark on the Huangpu cruise after seeing the Tower can catch a boat from here.
