India has confirmed that its 3G license auction will take start, as planned, on January 14th 2010. There have been reports of delays due to issues with military radio spectrum and a delay in sending out the formal notifications earlier this month.
"Auction will be according to the schedule. Allotment of spectrum to maintain the level playing field will be by August 2010," Telecom Minister Andimuthu Raja announced earlier today. "Allotment to the four service providers will be simultaneous," he added.
The auction is expected to bring in at least US$1.5 billion for the government. A separate WiMAX license auction will start two weeks after the 3G license sale is completed.
