China Mobile and Nokia Siemens Networks Conduct TD-LTE Femtocell Demo

China Mobile Communications Corporation (the parent company of Hong Kong listed China Mobile) and Nokia Siemens Networks have conducted what they say is the world's first TD-LTE femtocell demonstration.

"User habits indicate that the majority of mobile broadband capacity will be consumed inside homes and offices where coverage is typically lower than outdoor spaces," said Huang Xiaoqing, General Manager of China Mobile Research Institute. "Miniature wireless base stations like Femtocells can improve the indoor service experience of our customers. Further more, TD-LTE Femtocells can fully leverage the advantages of TDD frequency, provide a fast and flexible indoor coverage solution and effectively manage network capacity and cost."

Nokia Siemens Networks' Beijing research team demonstrated a live streaming video downlink application using a compact experimental Femtocell prototype in China Mobile's Research Institute laboratory. The demonstration achieved throughputs which exceed the typical xDSL speed currently possible via residential broadband connections.

"LTE is around the corner and we are doing everything to ensure its rapid deployment in networks around the world," said Stephan Scholz, CTO at Nokia Siemens Networks. "This demo - the world's first -highlights our innovative research leadership in LTE."

Following the industry's first TD-LTE lab demonstrations conducted with China Mobile in 2008, Nokia Siemens Networks has further expanded its R&D team in Hangzhou and Beijing, China, to support the commercial roll out of TD-LTE.
